__________________________________________________

Jokes aside, this week was my 2nd year of ATP. For those who are unfamiliar with the abbreviation's ATP, i have no idea what it stands for either. What I do know for certain is that it is a shooting test a soldier must take in order to qualify being a soldier. Incentives are great; for being a marksman(scoring 22/28), you'll get a funky badge sewn on your uniform and $200 in your pocket. Score badly and you'll have another re-shoot waiting for you in a few weeks time.

For some army people out there, going to the range is just like another Time Crisis game to them. They pick their rifles like they are laser-emitting guns that are used in arcades, go in there and clinch their marksman. For most army people, going to the range is a bloody waste for 2 days, especially since its ultimate sai kan to go and pick empty cartridges, clear up the training shed, filling up sand bags etc. and the rest of the whole day slack in the training shed until its your turn and then after the shooting of 15 mins, continue to slack on till the night. For the minority of army people, going to the range is a nerve-racking experience. They would always sit at a corner, thinking of the possibilities of failing. These people are labelled as "Bobo shooters" Dont ask me how the term bobo shooter come about, perhaps from some Star Wars Movie whereby Boba Fett just cant seem to kill with his laser guns.

I fall in the last category of army people. Being a really bad shooter, I have recounts of near-reshoot experiences throughout my whole army services. Ever since BMT, i had officers threatening me to pass the computerized test of shooting(IMT) due to one particular part of IMT whereby the target was just too small for me to shoot. In February this year, during my 1st ATP, I had failed the day shoot with only 5 shots on target. Thank God I eventually passed my day shoot on 2nd attempt.

So when I was able to fire rounds accurately on the Canadian bull target, I was thinking maybe I can get a marksman after all, since my zeroing was close to perfect. HAHA.. for a bobo shooter to actually entertain such a thought was certainly quite amusing. Its like an ikan bilis comparing its swiftness in the water with a salmon.

In the end, as it is known for a range test to happen all at once, I was too slow in preparing my firing position, resulting in average shots of 10 in the day, and 5 in the night . But since 10 + 5 = 15, meaning I have passed my test!!! (speculated as the results have not been announced yet)

I am just glad that the scary ordeal of firing is finally over, it being my of my major obstacles before I can ORD in peace. Now that it is done, all that is left is my major exercise.. BRAVO ETEP O_O

The end is near, and the warrior awaits the rest that has been ensured to him..

207

In South East Asia, child prostitution of girls aged 8-10 years old are bought by Westerners, who in turn helped to raise the country's GDP.
~Evil evil ways of increasing your country's GDP

It was quite disheartening to hear that my brother had 207 for his PSLE result. Although he can be a real pain when it comes to studying, he is still my brother and i feel for him. After all, to have 2 brothers with 225 and 226, you could say it was a personal disappointment on his part.

(On a sidenote, Bryo and I played a little bet after Irving proclaimed he can beat the both of us. Bryo would cut his family jewels and poked out his eyes if Irving scored over 240. I remained passive over such issues. In the end, he gave him 190 while I predicted 210. I guess I won the bet this time round)

Of all the people to have been affected, I felt my mum was hit the hardest. She was hoping that my brother will at least have the marks to have gone into St. Gabriel's, which stands at 218. With her original battle plan gone near to ruins, she had to relook at the manuscript, assessing whatever chances my brother has.

It gotten really serious when she had to activate the legendary Daron into her plan. Being naturally gifted as a A-maths students, she had used my name, together with Bryo's name to aid Irving in his appeal case into St. Gabriel through the connections with our old-time favourite A-math teacher, Mr Stanley Tan(By God's Grace, both Bryo and mua had the same A-maths teacher for Os).

I was also activated as a chauffeur. Together with my frantic mother as the vehicle commander, we travelled to almost every single secondary school near our house, including Compassvale Sec, Seng Kang Sec, Hougang Sec, Montfort Sec, North Vista Sec and Bartley Sec. As for my younger brother, killing cute cuddly toys in MapleStory seemed just as important as finding out where he will be going to for the next 4 years. But hey..! Let's not be critical at this point. As I sit down and reflect over my past experience, putting 3 schools that are ridiculously higher than my actual PSLE marks as my 1st 3 choice was a similar cause of ending up in St. Gabriel. It was an amazement that I still ended up in St. Gabriel's, it being my 4th choice. And what was I doing? Playing computer games with human like tentacles ruling the world.

Merciful God, I pray that You will do what's best for Irving. Bring him to a school that offers no evil. Even better, a school that teaches Your word and ultimately coming to know You. May You bless him with 4 years of enriching life, like how You bless me when I was in St. Gabriels.

Amen.

Oh.. Jeff my man shared with me this super cute video done by the Indians..! Enjoy~!

Pulau Ubin

the church peeps had organised a trip to Pulau Ubin to have their fellowship there.. Their mission was to unravel the lost time capsule dated 3 years ago, and at the same time cook outdoors, catching fish and insects.. not to mention the expeditions, the cycling.. I, on the other hand, had guard duty the day before this event, but if there is anything that can stop this super pioneer, its definitely not sleep.

After making sure that I had 7 hours of sleep (5 during guard duty and 2 in the afternoon), I booked out with eagerness and all set for Pulau Ubin. Coincidently, it was my brother's birthday. So after I dropped my mum and bro off at the cinema to catch their Stardust (haha~! slow~) movie, I headed down to the jetty, being only 1 hour late.

Packed my bags and head out to the jetty, i was amazed that the jetty had a facelift from its former self, with stone walls and covered walkways, there was even a police security checkpoint, probably to scan any illegal items etc. Sitting on the $2 jetty, its that kinda nostalgic feelings you feel when you first sit on the same boat 12 years ago.

The island remained the way it used to be; a chaotic bicycle hub with shopkeepers offering dirt-cheap bicycle deals. Well, i soon found out why my bicycle costed me $6 for the whole day, as the chain kept slipping out of the gear teeth. Ubin seemed to be the no 1 hotspot for schools to have their cycling expedition, leadership camps and uniformed group haunts. It was also the number one place for lost tourists who have no idea why Pulau Ubin is a favourite hangout area whereby most of the place looks pretty much plain, if not dull and boring. To me, Ubin is THE place to hone my skill of cycling. Proving to be a "challenging" terrain, I blasted my way down muddy tracks, Class X roads and bitumen roads.

It was shortly after 20 mins of cycling before I bumped into the church people. Apparently, they had split themselves up into 2 groups. I was in Jeff's group, who were busy trying to catch some fishes in one of the mangrove swamp. I must applaud the younger kids in our group who had the patience to try to catch some stuff, but it was before long that we decided to make our way to our final checkpoint at Noordin Beach, Northwest of Ubin.

Noordin Beach. Brings back memories of the days when I was a Venture Recruit in my scouts unit. How we had a turn-out near the OBS campsite and had to walk to this forsaken beach. How we had to pitch our tents and huddle together in the blasting rains of August. How we had to pick whatever dry twigs we could find on the next day to cook our breakfast. I was happy to find another scout unit sharing our cooking grounds with us when we got to the beach. It seemed pretty professional for them to pitch their tents and erect a flagpole.

Until they took out their bunsen burners to cook their lunch.

WAD?!? BUNSEN BURNERS? Of all the luxury items of camping outdoor, a scout NEVER carries with him a bunsen burner. I mean, bunsen burners are for the rest of the wussy CCAs. Scouts were mend to start a fire with whatever nature provides him. The bare minimal would have been solid fuel. It was pretty ironic for us to do it the true blue Scouts ways of starting a fire and watch the real scouts cook their food with science apparatuses.

After lunch, which consisted of instant noodles, chicken franks and marshmallows, our evacuation team had located the MGR of the time capsule, with the help of a huge clue of 2 metal coils tied to the branch of the tree. In the time capsule were some written tiles done by the EPOCH youths 4 years ago. Sadly, due to the poor state of preservation, many of the historic data retrieved were incomprehensible due to the fade of the ink. We made our own time capsule, this time wrapping our materials in a ziploc bag and securing it further with 2 messtins. Burying it at the same location, I hope to return here in a few year's time.

It rained on the way back to the jetty, but I thanked God for washing the mud away from the tyres of my bicycle. It was an engaging experience with the Church youths. Though it was pity I did not have the time to check up on Chek Jawa, I felt that the 3 hours spent on the island were meaningful ones. With whatever remaining time left for the day, I spent it with the planning community and with my family to celebrate my brother's birthday with a dinner.

Look at the stars
Look how they shine for you

And everything you do

Yeah, they were all yellow
~Coldplay, Yellow

The clear nightsky was littered with stars on the night of our exercise.
The land glittered just as brightly as the stars.
Not just the water droplet from the previous rain.
But from the fireflies as well.
They blinked in a weird harmony, somehow reminding me of Stardust.
And at the same time of Christmas lights hung on a tree.
I was awed by the wonders and the beauty God has given to mankind.
And even though i do voice out my amazement,
Nobody was really tat enthusiastic about such stuff, especially doing an exercise.
But its okay.
I get to keep the image fresh on my mind.
Always.

Pretty long day for a Saturday. Promised the 3 animal friends that I will be having breakfast with them, after much delays throughout this week. We ended up at Serangoon Garden Market, eating what supposed to be 7 person's meal. Let see.. We had Ju Gui, 1 ton mee, Pork Porridge, 2X Roti John, Mee Siam, Nasi Lemak, 2X Beancurd, Quiche Pie, and hot drinks. The best part was that it was around brunching time, so lunch was more or less settled on the spot. We did our little exploring after breakfast; JJ wanted to look up a new shop in the neighbourhood called "Cold Storage Speciality Store", which didnt really sell anything that specialised, I, on the other hand, went to good old NTUC to stock up for field camp. The menu includes 2 cans of tuna, 1 packet of jacob crackers, 1 bottle of nutella and khong guan banana biscuit. Yummy.

Shortly after that, I send my animal friends back home, it was off to pick up Plin. We(more likely I) were tasked to buy a box of donuts and 2 bottles of drinks, since we lost to a game last week during YF. YummyO at Hougang Festival. Looks exactly like Donut Factory. The peeps in church were grateful for the donuts, and the competition as well, since 4 of them were on holiday. Bible classes and YF continues on as per normal.

Satisfying Saturday draws closer towards the end when I met the councillor friends in the evening. Damn, it has been close to about 4 months since we have last met, the last time being at the Village at the Heerens. The meeting was to celebrate the birthday's of all the late October and November babies, it being Yi Xuan, Daniel and Amy. Sadly, out of the 3, only Daniel could make it. Nevertheless, attendance remained strong with Berton, Supoh, Jasmine, Fel Ngiam, Kelvin, Bdict, rare guest Ritchie and Zoe in the house of Fishermen Wharf down at Clarke Quay. Fishermen Wharf has been a popular fish & chips eatery for young people, with their $6.50 Fish & chips and fishy ambiance. My only problem for such a popular hangout area would have been on the air-conditioning, which would have been a lot better for a stuffy room along the side of busy Havelock Road. Dinner was great. Many of us sticked to the $6.50 Fish & Chip. Daron and Zozo chose to be more adventurous instead. He selected the North Atlantic Halibut while she picked out the North Atlantic Snow Fish. For a slight price increase, my North Atlantic Halibut was a lot fleshier than the Fish & Chip and the Zozo's Snow Fish was a lot tastier than my Halibut.

We ended the day with a walk by the Singapore River with our Japanese Ice-creams dripping away. Had a great chat with the council people by the river, and as i sat there looking around at the the night life, I can't help to think that 2007 is indeed coming to an end. As we slowly but surely celebrated everyone's birthday together, we are boiled down to just 2 birthdays before the year closes. Hint hint, whoever is reading this blog entry, ya, the birthdays are supoh and mua, making me the youngest out of the 87 batch. But who cares about age man? I'm young at heart and I'm looking forward in enjoying the remaining 1 month of so being a nineteen year young teenager..

Haha.. Satisfying Saturday.. Looking forward to another Satisfying Saturday on 15th December.

Half day off on Friday was a blessing for many of us, since we will be chionging in an exercise on Monday. I took the opportunity to catch up with the church people. After labouriously planning for the dinner at Thomson Road, we, Plin, Esther, Zh and mua set off together, meeting Eil at Thomson Plaza at 7pm. It was nostalgic to be back at Thomson Rd. My history with it dates back when I was 5 and Thomson Plaza was called "Yohan". I was learning piano at Yamaha and had been at it for many years. Still, even after my years a piano veteran, my family would often visit the shopping centre for the food, groceries and the haircut. Currently, Thomson Plaza was having a face-lift as it is widening the unloading and loading bay and at the same time putting up the decos for the coming Christmas.

After walking around the oh so familiar plaza, we ended up walking along Thomson Road in search of authentic food. There were a whole variety of food. There is chicken rice, dim sum, noodles, Western meals etc. Its amazing while Thomson Plaza has retained most of its shops over the years, Thomson Road has not. It came as a surprise when I have seen places I have never seen before. We ended up at Miss Clarity Cafe, a cutsy restaurant. Its bright colourful walls, girly prints and pink plastic cups were screaming for attention. It was quite a girly place, but a comfortable place for the girls in my group to warm up to.

The portion was small and nothing quite fantastic. We had a quick dinner before departing for our dessert at Baker's Story. If Miss Clarity Cafe was new in Thomson Road, Baker's Story is secluded, hidden deeper at SinMing with a tall hedge hiding it. Nevertheless, the quiet surrounding gives a sense of security to the customers patronising the stall; it was our little quite corner where we had the whole table to ourselves. Plin and Esther were new to the dessert shop. Eil, zh and I, on the other hand, were a little more lao jiao, but in the name of adventurous spirit, we decided to try other cakes. We had an apple crumble, White Chocolate Cheesecake, Lemon something something cake and their signature dish, the Cheesecake Brownie. 2 words which describes this cake; Simply Delicious.

It was a great night till the very end. Had a great time with the church peeps and as the break from the Friday Bible Studies comes to an end, I have not regretted every occasion we have spent together. Firstly, the outing with Esther and Plin at Taka Mall. Secondly, the movie outing with Plin watching Stardust and lastly, this dinner. And although I'm not entirely looking forward to next Friday's guard duty, I think there will be a time when all good things has got to come to an end and its a matter of how one reflects upon it.

To end this post, I represent a Youtube link Fel has sent to me the other day. Ultimately funny, and dont take some of the jobs too seriously.. Enjoy!

______________________________________________________________

"Hey Yishan, Im now at Golden Landmark Hotel at Arab Street. Is Haji Lane around the.."
(Zozo pointed out the small green sign at the corner of the street)

"Oh.. never mind.. I've found the place"

I seriously had no idea where Haji Lane was. It is just like the other fashion streets such An Siang and Devonshire Rd; if you do not know where it is, chances of it being tucked away from human sight is pretty high. Anyway, Haji Lane isnt new to me. Coming across Juice and Catalog Magazine, there has been many mentions about this place, selling unique brands and one-piece items.

So, it was a perfect opportunity for the three of us, Zozo, Bdict and mua to find a present for our dear Daniel. After doing some shopping of our own at Bugis Junction (we spied upon a few shops such as Grapnigh, Muji, Topshop), we finally decided to locate Haji Lane. On hindsight, it was a little quiet street with narrow passageway hardly enough for 2 cars to pass through. Its layout was like that of Chinese Quarters, reminding you of the 1960s. But with the twist of modern art and design, Haji Lanes is now a fashion hub for inspiring retail owners. Few observations made on the shops in Haji Lane.
1. Most of them have air-con with a very niche interior design. Plenty of creativity in their decorations. Sliding doors, cupboards resembling items on sale, old fruit candy tins, taxi signs as lamps, its an individual shop which screams its originality from the others.
2. There is always a pair working, be it guy/girl, girl/girl, guy/guy, and most of them have a desktop PC or a notebook.
3. Price ranges like nobody's business, from a simple silk-screen tee at $20 to a pure leather handbag at $929.
4. Seen quite a number of young people around the shops, not to mention the couples and the good-looking gals and hunks.

It's a pretty cool hangout area. There's a middle-east cafe in the middle of haji lane which looks promising. The shops are both meant for the gents and the ladies, some of the ladies stuff even looked appealing to my eyes. There was this particular shop which has caught my attention for their cheap yet intrinsic design to their jewellery. Other shops offer Svensson Jeans, which had a very nice textile material tat feels comfortable and within the affordable price range. Haha~ heck, its a good dating spot, especially if your gal is a shopaholic or a window shopper.

After walking around Haji Lane, the three of us took a break eating Ah Bo Ling at Golden Mile Shopping Centre. It was pretty simple way of ending the afternoon. Each of us got ourselves something from our expedition. Ive got a top from Muji, Bdict a pair of business pants and Zozo, a pair of mini-shorts and black vest at a shop in Haji Lane. Plus, we got Daniel a T-shirt from Haji Lane. So our mission accomplished, shopping trip was satisfying.

I'll definitely go back to Haji Lane 1 more time~!

If Sting got sued for his name by a bee, then Tham-bee is in big trouble... haha.. ok, that was a DBee Joke!

I guess this is one of those rare occasions our platoon went out as a near-complete whole, even rarer for Thambi to join us for a movie. But when he mentioned that he was interested in watching the "Bee Movie" today, we grasped the opportunity of chilling out together.

Recently, there were many crazy things that have been revolving our lovable thambi. It started with the SWO and his thirty years done by YongTeng, then there was the frog noises created by Daniel, and now there is talk all about DB Jokes and 90 percentage. But hey, if you're not part of Survey Platoon, please pardon me for the inside jokes.

Anyway, 90 percentage can be applied anywhere in your daily life. We had a live example while watching the movie. Towards the end of the movie , or say 90 percentage of the show, the whole cinema
at AMK Cathay suddenly blacked out. The next thing that happened was YongTeng shouting "90 percent!" It took a while before the movie came back again. While waiting, a few incidents happened. One of the staffs came in and apologised to the whole lot of us, offering to refund our movie(which was what we were hoping for since there was only 10% left of it anyway). In the midst of that chaos, Thambi spilled 90 percentage of his lemon tea on Jax, making his t-shirt 90 percentage wet. By the time the movie came back again, another staff (or perhaps the manager) came in and apologise for the inconvenience caused. BUT HE DID NOT MENTION ABOUT ANY REFUND. Well, it was a one second disappointment, but what the heck, it was only 2 minutes till the end, so we didnt suffer from the black out. :D

90 percentage. What a high level of certainty, and yet there is a 10% chance the odds may turn against you. Well, it happend to YongTeng and Thambi on one occasion that affect the rest of the whole day, but rather than mellow about a depressing incident, a joke was created out of it. And such jokes will also be alive in our Survey Platoon.

We can rule the world-
Yeah you and me we can light up the sky
If you stay by my side
We can rule the world-

If walls break down, I will comfort you
If angels cry, oh I’ll be there for you
You've saved my soul
Don’t leave me now, don’t leave me now

Oh

Yeah you and me we can ride on a star

If you're Sin^2X and i'm Cos^2X, then we form as one..
~ Cheesy!!

I had a sumptuous meal with Caleb after a game of dota (yep, we trashed Andreas and Elisha in Dota, but got owned in some Pudge war). We had our dinner at Cafe Cartel; I had the famous St. Louis Pork Ribs, Caleb had some Texas Pork Ribs. U could say we had twins which were sunburned and blackened, nevertheless, both tasted great as usual. There was of course, the free flow of bread and the cakes at half price.. Had a great time talking about a whole lot of stuffs, from hacking to Freakomatics to Telemarketing to dating etc. But the main emphaysis of us meeting up and eating at such a fine place was actually to celebrate his freedom from the slavery of SAF. his ORD date.

Ahh.. the sweet smell of ORD. How it is so near to me that it should come before me with a blink of an eye, and yet how it is so far such that i have to wait for another 3 more months before i take my official leave from this organisation. Friends all around me ORDing like the daffodils fluttering in the autumn air, like Bdict, Klin, Dan, Leon, Bryan, Andy, Daniel from church(and many others, sorry never mention u guys!), and from my platoon as well, PC, Sgt Benard and Sgt Dingwen. There is a certain envy when i saw that pink IC, but at the same time, I know my time is near.

Well, the list of activities is as follows, shortly after survey course, there will be a string of 2 exercises and a range for my 2nd year. in addition, there wil be 2 guard duties and perhaps a parade. After all those are over and Christmas starts to kick in, the rest are pretty much administrative. Signing clearances, going for ORD talks and doing a dental FFI and Medical FFI before 060208!!!!

The excitement.. the adrenaline rush.. I JUST CANT WAIT TO ORD!! 3 MORE MONTHS.. HERE IT COMES!!!

I remembered hearing about this movie. The thought of watching this movie was reinforced when Eileen told me she would be watching with her business class. When I finally heard that Stardust was based on a novel created by Neil Gaiman, I knew I had to watch it. It was a must see movie, since it was coming from a renowned writer who created the Sandman series.

So I arranged a movie outing with Plin, since Esther was going for a birthday celebration in conjunction with the show's timing and Zh was not interested in such movies. Picked her up at around 8.30pm and made our way to J8 to watch the show at 9.10pm. Although I knew it was a fantasy cum romance film, I had no idea what to expect.

Initially, the show started off with 2 worlds. The main character (Tristan) made a promise to his fiance-to-be that he would fetch the star after seeing a shooting star for her birthday, only to find a girl (Yvaine) in place of a chunk of rock. Tristan and Yvaine started off badly with one another, but as the story unfolds itself, the love between one another grew stronger. At the same time, they faced many challenges, such as the witch in search of immortality, the brothers after the ruby pendant around Yvaine's neck. The show had a good mix of humour and serious thinking. I was initially kinda turned off by such an arrangement, and even had to force out a laugh, but later on i slowly open up to the movie, feeling the emotion of the characters and enjoying the creative ideas Neil Gaiman supplies, such as using runes to find things, the flying lightning harvester etc. It is indeed one of the finest piece of fantasy ever created. Plin had great reviews of the show as well. Out of the movies I have watched so far, Stardust is definitely one of the best so far. It would definitely want to watch it again.

After the show, we decided to add fats to our body. I brought her to Casuarina Roti Prata. It is a crazy place with awesome Masala Thosai and crispy roti pratas. Sadly, we were chased out as the shop closes at 12am. In the end, we ended up eating at the other option, midnight curry at Kovan. The "liao" was quite tasty, but there was little taste of the curry, making it quite disappointing for it to be midnight curry. Based on preference, the shop at Jalan Besar sells much better curry than the ones at Kovan. But we had fun chit-chatting and eating. Send her back just at about 1am, probably one of the latest so far.

To end off this post, here are some quotes i felt are really good from the movie itself. Enjoy!

Yvaine: You know when I said I knew little about love? That wasn't true. I know a lot about love. I've seen it, centuries and centuries of it, and it was the only thing that made watching your world bearable. All those wars. Pain, lies, hate... It made me want to turn away and never look down again. But when I see the way that mankind loves... You could search to the furthest reaches of the universe and never find anything more beautiful. So yes, I know that love is unconditional. But I also know that it can be unpredictable, unexpected, uncontrollable, unbearable and strangely easy to mistake for loathing, and... What I'm trying to say, Tristan is... I think I love you. Is this love, Tristan? I never imagined I'd know it for myself. My heart... It feels like my chest can barely contain it. Like it's trying to escape because it doesn't belong to me any more. It belongs to you. And if you wanted it, I'd wish for nothing in exchange - no fits. No goods. No demonstrations of devotion. Nothing but knowing you loved me too. Just your heart, in exchange for mine.

Septimus: No, Primus, I think you'll find that YOU killed the bishop by drinking from the wrong cup! Oh, when you're done wrestling with your conscience, I suggest you return to your chamber. Leave the quest for the stone to me.

Yvaine: If there's one thing I know about all my years watching Earth, is that people aren't what they may seem. There are shop boys, and there are boys that just happened to work in a shop for the time being. And trust me Tristan, you are no shop boy. You saved my life. Thank you.
